Things have been rather quiet on the blog lately; my apologies. I’m off to a conference next week – the first time I’ll be speaking at a big conference in about four years – and what with that and a long break coming up over Xmas (during which laptop will be banned by a Significant Other who brooks no dissent) I seem to be rushing around like a crazed thing fulfilling duties and getting things in order.
This morning I gave a talk to a group of schoolgirls from a local school. I was more nervous about that than talking in front of my peers next week, even though conferences can be vicious places. 13 year old girls with no particular interest in or apptitude for maths are not necessarily the easiest of audiences. But I had them wearing silly wigs and pretending to be frogs, and by golly they seemed absorbed, entertained, and educated.
Here’s some food for thought.
